Who is David MacQueen?
……….and what is DavidMacQueen.com?
To answer the first question:
David is a professional creative; a designer with extensive knowledge and experience of Garden Design, Interior Design, Architecture and Art.
He was born and brought up on the Isle of Bute in south-west Scotland. The island, surrounded by the warming effects of the Gulf Stream, is a sub-tropical haven with palm trees and provided much of his early inspiration in Art & Design. This inspiration grew into a healthy interest in plants and eventually, gardens.
Much of his early years were spent in the local library devouring as many books as he could about art, architecture and design. As a child he showed great promise in art and at the age of 5 won a British-wide National competition to design an advertising campaign to promote world friendship.
Fascinated with Lego-bricks and then Meccano (anyone remember having a set of these as a child?), he constructed as many “buildings and machines” as he could imagine. This fired a very early interest in architecture and building, fed his love of art & design and all things that could be imagined in a creative way……..then designed and built! On architecture; …..”since a child i have been fascinated about how things were built, about how they were put together, and about how different shapes could be created and built, often reflecting nature”.
He moved to London in the mid-80′s and began a successful Design career, first gaining 2 years intensive experience of Architecture within an architect’s studio before adding a strong Interior Design skillset learned with an Interior Design office in Berkshire.
Years of schooling, then tertiary education had earned him the qualifications and technical aptitude necessary to follow his personal and professional ambitions with confidence, later adding a BA (Hons) in architectural Interior Design to his credits. During these years, David realised the design skills he had learned were pointing to an integration of “the total package” for Home & Garden. Further interest and study in Garden Design emphasized this point.
In 1992, David trained at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, London under the expert eye of legendary garden designer, John Brookes. Much of David’s styling and geometric approach to gardens are strongly influenced from his early life experiences in Graphics, Architecture and Interior Design. The ability to draw on influences from these design professions allow his work to knit seamlessly between inside and outside rooms, unifying the whole design concept in the process.
In 2005, he was invited by the Royal Horticultural Society to create a Chic Show Garden for the Chelsea Flower Show. Without question, the worlds’ most famous and most prestigious horticultural event and his garden was highly acclaimed by the press, media, the public and judges alike when he was awarded a Silver-Gilt medal for his novel design.
In 2006, David represented the United Kingdom at the inaugural International Flora in Montreal, Canada. Supported by the British Council, his bold, contemporary show garden was widely acclaimed for the use of bullet-proof glass as a patio material, made all the more unusual built on a delicate framework over a pool of water, giving the impression of “walking on water”.
……..“garden design is not just about familiar plants and familiar materials, it’s also about thinking outside the box…….. to be able to create something special, something memorable,……one must have conviction and a strong belief in self to create a sense of place worthy of admiration”…..
Since 1992, David set up his own design firm in Garden Design and Interior Design and often travels Internationally to meet with Clients’ requesting his design services. Widely travelled, but based now in Oxford, he regularly writes and paints (occasionally offering artwork for sale).
