Garden Design

What’s the difference between Garden Design and Landscape Design?

To many, the terms garden design and landscape design are interchangeable, to others they are the same.  To add into the perceived confusion, one could also consider the subjects of Landscape Architecture and Public Art.  While there is great debate upon the differences I prefer to consider the similarities of each subject in a chameleon-like manner, i.e. each subject can often take on the colouring of the others depending on the type of project being undertaken.

A whole debate lasting forever, could be argued and no one faction could ever be clearly determined.  So to summarise this as clearly and concisely as I can, Garden Design can be summed up as the design of domestic gardens, usually immediately relative to the home or property.  This of course can range from the tiniest balcony or roof garden to the grandest of country estates, though this is where distinctions between the subjects can begin to merge.

Garden Design, Landscape Design, Landscape Architecture or Public Art?

Landscape Design is generally the design of larger properties where the intimacy of home and private garden can be knitted into the grander scheme, most often where the grand scheme consists of several acres of land.  Planned Public and Commercial outdoor spaces could also be considered within this category, though the introduction of Landscape Architecture clouds the distinction even more.

Much argument has been made that Landscape Architects don’t know their plants, counter-claimed that Garden and Landscape Designers don’t know their architecture.  Here, at davidmacqueen.com this argument never arises.  David MacQueen has great knowledge and experience of all these design subjects and successfully flits seamlessly between them all.
